An Ordinary Carpenter's Saw Making Extra-Ordinary Music

One of my discoveries has been the interest that communities have in Singing Saw Concerts. In the several that I have conducted I’ve been intrigued at the good turn-out and response by people to this novel event. In all sorts of venues, church or non-church programs, the concerts have been a delight to use as a tool to enlarge people’s vision on ‘just ordinary people doing extra ordinary things’. It's a great way to open doors of ministry and evangelism. I usually weave pertinent stories in amongst quite a few saw tunes. That way the audience gets some unique music, a vision for mission outside themselves, and a bit of humour to entertain. They also don't seem to mind attending an event that lasts up to 90 minutes in length. (In a couple of places the organizers included a pot luck meal or coffee and snacks as an added incentive to give folk a whole program of fun and fellowship.)

Here are some comments from those who have attended:

"That was a very informative and fun filled evening."

"The music from that golden saw is beautiful. I would never have dreamed that such clear notes could be heard from a carpenter’s handsaw."

"When I was invited to come to a concert to hear a ‘musical saw’ I didn’t believe it."

"Those hymns played from the hauntingly beautiful music of a handsaw, brought back such nostalgic memories."

"This concert was so different than I expected. I hardly knew what to expect when my friend invited me to hear a ‘singing saw’! But it was marvellous. And the story behind the music made this event very special."

I will never forget the "Seven I Am’s" of John’s Gospel. That is a fantastic tool for remembering. You are also a gifted story-teller!"

"When will you do this again? Your music and stories were great listening. I want to bring more friends next time!"
